During our 40 years of providing our clients with plastic injection molded parts, we have utilized a wide range of materials to help get products quickly and reliably into the marketplace.
Our resident experts are always interested in your material preferences. And this recent poll on ABS vs. PVC is no different.
Just a reminder, ABS stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene. ABS is tough and performs well in both heat and cold. It is impact resistant and can withstand chemical corrosion while remaining elastic and flexible. It comes in a wide range of colours and can even be injected into more than one cavity in the same mould.
ABS is an important component in electrical and electronic assemblies, medical devices including inhalers and tracheal tubes, as well as automotive trim components.
ABS has some important weaknesses. It doesn’t always stand up to the weather, and those brilliant colours may fade in the sun or under other UV light.
The second choice was PVC, a widely used thermoplastic, polyvinyl chloride used in electronic cabling, plumbing, construction, and signage applications. PVC is strong and offers exceptional flame and chemical resistance. Its superior dielectric properties are what make it such a popular insulator.
PVC also has an important shortcoming. It’s not always suitable for medical devices because it can be toxic and can increase the risk of asthma and allergies for some who come in contact with it.
Now, let's get to the part you have been waiting for. You love them both! With a complete tie, users voted 47% in favour of ABS and 47% in favour of PVC, while 7% of people voted for "other".
Thanks for taking the time to vote.
